Guest Speakers

Over the course of several weeks our classes were enriched by a series of influentual guest speakers who brought valuable insights and real world experience to our learning. These speakers each had their own unique expertise in industry perspective which has helped to contribute significantly to my personal and professional development. I felt it was important to include some examples of their contributions within my portfolio as they not only deepened my understanding of key topics but also inspired new ways of thinking about my future career path and how to potentially get into it.

It was really inspiring getting to hear Astrid talk about her career because of the way she combines strong creative direction with a deep understanding of culture and communication. Her work shows how design can be both beautifully crafted and meaingful which is something I really value as someone hoping to work in fashion media. I am especially drawn to how she's built a career across different industries without losing her true focus even if she was potentially knocked down at points. Seeing and getting to hear her speak about her ups and downs really stayed with me especially as she never gave up and now is very successful

Carrie Maclennan

Carrie Maclennan has completed her studies in media, music, communication and identity in Glasgow. She currently spends her time working at The Standard Hotel opposite the Clocktower in London.

She runs an online gift and concept store and has published a creative book on sewing.

Carrie is originally from Scotland but moved to England in 2012. She used to work in marketing but really didn't enjoy it. Driven by her lifelong obsession of storytelling through objects she launched 'Not the kind' which is an online gallery and gift shop that became an experimental creative outlet.

What began as a side project for Carrie, quickly became a meaningful expression of identity and resilience.

This story really resonated with me because it shows how creative work doesn't always have to follow a traditional path to be meaningful. 'Not The Kind' represents the idea that personal expression even if it's messy and uncertain can still be powerful. I really admired her honesty behind starting something out of frustration and turning it into creative freedom especially when she was doubting herself. It helped to remind me that it's okay to not have everything figured out. Life isn't a race. This mindset is something that I hope to carry with me as I find my place within the fashion media world.
